All hands on: Basketry

Flechten – eine Kulturtechnik, tausende Jahre alt, weltweit praktiziert, regional ausgeprägt und bis heute Handwerk im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: Nur der Mensch beherrscht die komplexe Flechttechnik, keine Maschine kann ihn ersetzen. Die Ausstellung stellt die Faszination dieser Fertigkeit in den Mittelpunkt, zeigt Verflechtungen zwischen historisch gewachsenem Wissen und modernen Innovationen.

In der Gestaltung der Ausstellung haben wir eine klare Formensprache entwickelt, die subtil auf Rhythmik und Struktur des Flechtens eingeht. Auf dünnen Beinen stehende großformatige Displays geben den Rahmen für die vier Ausstellungsbereiche Mensch, Schutz, Material und Muster. Ergänzt wird diese Situation durch räumlich-installative Hands On Stationen, welche die BesucherInnen einladen, die Bereiche zu betreten, zu entdecken und Teil der Ausstellung zu werden.

Basketry is a cultural technique that is thousands of years old, practised worldwide, regionally distinctive and still a handicraft in the truest sense of the word. Humans alone have mastered the complex weaving method, with no machine capable of replacing their artisanship. The exhibition focuses on this fascinating skill and reveals the interconnections between historically evolved knowledge and modern innovations.

For the exhibition design we have developed a clear formal display vocabulary that subtly addresses the rhythm and structure of weaving. Large-format displays standing on thin legs provide the framework for the four exhibition areas People, Protection, Material and Patterns. This situation is complemented by spatial-installative hands-on stations that invite visitors to enter the areas, discover them and become part of the exhibition.
