Retrotopia - Design for Socialist Spaces
Design für kooperatives Ausstellungsprojekt
Ein innovatives Netzwerk aus Kuratorinnen und Institutionen ermöglicht neue und überraschende Einblicke in die komplexen Schichten der Designlandschaft einer Region, die einem breiteren und vor allem dem westlichen Publikum bis heute nicht bekannt ist. Mit ihren umfangreichen Recherchen und Forschungen tragen die Akteurinnen von „Retrotopia“ entscheidend zu einer überfälligen Neubewertung der globalen und dekolonialen Designgeschichte bei.
In unserem Design sind wir bewusst mit Bestandselementen der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin umgegangen. Dadurch ist eine ressourcenschonende Ausstellung entstanden, die neben ihrem nachhaltigen Umgang auch einen aktualisierten Blick auf die Thematik wirft. Durch Anordnung, Erweiterung, Neukombination und Reduktion ist ein Parcours entstanden, welcher den Betrachter/innen die Möglichkeit gibt sich intuitiv durch die Ausstellungsbereiche zu bewegen. Durch eine runde Anordnung von Bankelementen, wird dem Ausstellungsraum ein neues Element zugefügt, welches die klassische Museumsbank in Bedeutung und Form erweitert. Der spezifische Ort des Aufenthaltes, Austausches und Reflexion zieht sich als Kreis durch den Ausstellungsraum, ist dabei auch Leitsystem, Grenze und Verbindung zwischen den verschiedenen Projekten, die gezeigt werden.
Das Projekt wurde von Claudia Banz kuratiert, Kuratorin für Design am Kunstgewerbemuseum, in Kooperation mit den co-Kuratoren Polina Baitsym, Alex Bykov, Melinda Farkasdy, Judith Horváth, Helena Huber-Doudová, Silke Ihden-Rothkirch, Karolina Jakaitė, Viera Kleinová, Rostislav Koryčánek, Mari Laanemets, Kai Lobjakas, Florentine Nadolni, Anna Maga, Kaja Muszyńska, Cvetka Požar, Klára Prešnajderová, Alyona Sokolnikova und Koraljka Vlajo.

An innovative network of curators and institutions has come together to open up new and surprising insights into the complex facets of the design landscape of a region that remains unknown to the broader (and in particular Western) public. With their extensive research work, the forces behind Retrotopia are making a decisive contribution to a long-overdue re-evaluation of the global and decolonial history of design.
In our exhibition design, we consciously used elements from the inventory of the Museum. The result is a resource-saving exhibition that also takes a contemporary look at the subject through its sustainable approach. Through arrangement, expansion, recombination and reduction, a parcour has been created that allows the viewer to move intuitively through the exhibition areas. Through a circular arrangement of bench elements, a new display is added to the exhibition space, which expands the classic museum bench in meaning and form. The specific place of rest, exchange and reflection runs as a circle through the exhibition space, and is also a guiding system, border and connection between the different projects that are shown.
